Job breakdowns

Three companies now sell you the same pitch: an AI that works in your apps while you do something else.

The pitch sounds identical in every landing page screenshot. The actual products don't behave the same way, and the differences say more about each company's strategy than any of them will admit outright.

The Timeline Nobody States Plainly

Anthropic moved first, technically. Computer use, the ability for Claude to see a screen and operate it like a person, shipped back in 2024. This year Anthropic layered Claude Cowork on top, aimed specifically at non-technical users rather than developers.

OpenAI took a different route. It added app control to Codex in April 2026, then launched Workspace Agents for third-party integrations, then debuted ChatGPT Work for multi-step tasks.

xAI is the newest entrant. Grok Bot launched in beta on August 11, 2026, as the first product to come out of xAI's roughly $60 billion acquisition of Cursor.

Read that order again. Anthropic built the underlying capability first and productized it slowly. OpenAI built it feature by feature across separate launches. xAI bought a company that already had developer distribution and shipped a full agent product on top of it in one move. Same destination, three completely different paths to get there.

Where Each One Actually Wins

Independent comparisons converge on a few real differences, not marketing differences.

Grok Bot's stated edge is real-time access to X data, something neither Claude nor ChatGPT can match natively. If your workflow depends on live social signal, that's not a small thing.

Claude's reported edge is reasoning quality and compliance features, which is exactly what you'd expect from the company that shipped computer use first and has spent longer thinking about oversight.

OpenAI's edge is breadth: a wider plugin ecosystem and multiple entry points (Codex, Workspace Agents, ChatGPT Work) depending on whether you're a developer, a team, or a general user.

None of these are "the best AI agent." They're three different bets on what kind of user actually needs this.

The Comparison Nobody Wants to Say Out Loud

Here's the detail that got buried in most coverage: Anthropic is reportedly one of xAI's largest compute customers, at the same time that Claude Cowork directly competes with Grok Bot.

Sit with that for a second. One of these companies is paying the other for infrastructure while racing it for the same customers. That's not a hypothetical conflict of interest, it's an active one, and it's a preview of how tangled the AI infrastructure layer has gotten. Compute providers and product competitors are no longer separate categories.

The Feature That Actually Separates Them

Strip away the marketing and one real technical difference stands out: how each system decides which model or process handles a given task.

Reporting on Grok Bot notes something specific: users don't choose a model for their bot. Routing happens automatically on the backend, and at least one early tester called that automatic router "not great" during testing.

Compare that to how Claude Code and similar developer tools work, where you can point the same coding agent at different underlying models depending on cost or capability needs. That's a meaningfully different design philosophy: one system trusts its own routing completely, the other assumes you'll want to choose.

Neither approach is objectively correct. But if you're the kind of user who wants control over exactly what's answering your task, that distinction should weigh more in your decision than any benchmark chart.

My Take

The three companies aren't actually competing on "who has the smartest agent" right now. They're competing on what kind of trust each one is asking you for.

xAI is asking you to trust its routing completely and get real-time X data in return. Anthropic is asking you to trust its oversight and compliance posture. OpenAI is asking you to trust its breadth across a wider set of entry points. Pick the trust model that matches your actual risk tolerance, not the one with the flashiest demo video.

Actionable Takeaways

  • Don't pick a platform based on the demo. Pick it based on whether you want automatic model routing or manual control over what handles your task.

  • If your work depends on live X/social data specifically, that's the one differentiator that isn't replicated elsewhere yet.

  • Factor in the infrastructure relationships between these companies. A vendor competing with its own compute supplier is a genuinely unusual market structure worth watching.

If a company both supplies your AI vendor's compute and competes with its product, whose incentives are actually aligned with getting your task done well?
