If you cannot measure how you use AI, you cannot tell whether it is making you sharper — or just faster at outsourcing the thinking.

The founders already solved this

John Adams and Benjamin Franklin did not wait for an app to tell them who they were becoming. They kept diaries on purpose. Franklin’s thirteen virtues were a spreadsheet before spreadsheets. Adams wrote to examine his own conduct, not to produce content.

The point was not confession. It was instrumentation.

I use Grok the same way. Long threads are a working diary I cannot hold entirely in my head. I use them to corroborate whether a thought is coherent or “too far off the ranch,” to keep vocabulary from shrinking, and to check that I am still the one leading. The standing goal in my own scorecard is 90% Human-First: I frame, I correct, I decide. Grok synthesizes. If that ratio slips, the diary is lying.

That is the test a built-in dashboard should make cheap for everyone — not just people willing to run a private meta-chat for months.

The homemade version

Earlier this year, I asked Grok for a usage card and posted the first mock. WHOOP energy: a percentile, a streak, a reason you are not average. I have kept that chat as a living dashboard ever since. Tokens by period. Human-First vs AI-First by category. Business-day streaks with a weekend buffer. Accidental clicks that burn quota when the footer shoves Speaker and Reload. Live bot count. Public work.

It works. It is also ridiculous that a power user has to role-play the product.

There is still no first-class view of:

  • tokens burned this week vs last, Grok vs Bot

  • remaining shared quota on Heavy

  • chats that are one-shot vs the 200-turn ones

  • which bots actually work

  • how much compute was wasted on misclicks and regenerations

You can feel a Heavy wall. You cannot see the shape of your own use.

Why this belongs next to WHOOP and Fitbod

WHOOP does not hide strain because strain is uncomfortable. Fitbod does not hide whether you actually lifted. Those products treat your data as the product.

Grok, Grok Bot, Imagine, and X already have the telemetry. SpaceXAI would benefit if every surface showed the user their own pattern:

  • Am I leading, or pasting?

  • Am I compounding one domain, or spraying one-shot questions?

  • Are twenty bots a team, or a junk drawer?

  • Did the footer just charge me for a fat-finger?

A percentile without a method is vanity. A percentile next to Human-First %, a streak you can explain, and bot-level burn is a training log.

The card I mocked for Galaxy is deliberate kitsch: gold secret-rare frame, three orbs, HP = day streak, ability = Human-First. Collectible language for a serious metric. Opt-in on a profile. Quiet in settings if you do not want it public.

What I asked the team to ship

Posted to the Grok Bot Galaxy call for ideas (thread):

  1. One official card — remaining quota, Grok vs Bot burn, 7- and 30-day trend

  2. Accidental-click and regenerated-turn counts (wasted compute is a first-class stat)

  3. Per-bot usage

  4. Optional public card on profile

  5. A Goal / Purpose field on long chats, the way bots already have a description

  6. Search that actually indexes titles and pinned chats

  7. A footer that does not shove Speaker into Reload mid-render

I am not asking them to gamify addiction. I am asking them to gamify attention. Depth over volume. Leading over pasting. A team of bots you can account for.

If any of it gets built on stream, even a quota sparkline, that is a win. If it does not, the homemade dashboard stays. Measurement does not require permission.

Galaxy is the right week

Grok Bot Galaxy is September 15–17 — live at The Howard in San Francisco and on the livestream. The week is about bots that do real work across real tools. A usage card is how you keep that work honest.

Bots without a scoreboard are a team with no stand-up. You will not know which hire is earning the seat.

I will be watching the stream with the same question Franklin brought to the page every night: did today’s practice move the number that matters, or only the one that looks like motion?

If you already keep a dashboard chat, you are not extra. You are early.
