"Maybe we should start a competitor to Amazon."
That's Elon Musk, posting on X on Thursday 15th October 2026. @elonmusk
Here's what set him off.
Imagine you have an AI bot that does your shopping. You tell it what you want, and it goes and orders it. That is the idea behind Grok Bots. "Grok Bots are xAI's personal AI agents, which work on your behalf inside various apps, including shopping sites."
Now imagine Amazon won't let it in.
An X user called @thecsguy said that was happening: "Amazon is blocking Grok bots from ordering, and Elon's answer is just have your bot buy it somewhere else".
He had skin in the game. "One of my Grok bots only handles my Amazon returns, so I'm watching this one closely."
And he had a suggestion for Musk. "Elon, I think it's time for an X Shop?"
Musk reposted it and replied with that one line about a rival.
Was he serious? Yahoo Finance, running the story from Moneywise, won't call it. "Whether Musk was being serious or just trying to get a dig in on his billionaire rival's company is unclear."
The rivalry is personal, too. "Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are embroiled in a battle of the billionaires, and the stakes keep rising."
And Grok isn't the only bot stuck at the door. The story says Amazon has been blocking several AI agents from its store, Meta's Muse among them.
Here's the part worth learning, from Y Combinator co-founder Paul Graham.
About a week before Musk's reply, Graham posted: "Amazon banning agents is the first opportunity I've seen since Amazon was founded for a startup to create an Amazon".
His logic runs in three steps.
"People will want agents to buy stuff for them."
"If they need to ban agents, it must mean people want to use them, or there would be no point."
"And that in turn means there's demand for a competitor that allows them."
Put simply, a shop only bans something its customers want to use.
Musk shared Graham's post with one word: "Seriously."
So is an X Shop on the way? Musk and Amazon didn't answer Moneywise. Grok did. "No confirmed plans or timeline for a full competitor yet."
Grok's last line: "Meanwhile Grok can still hunt the best deals elsewhere."
@thecsguy's post ended on a question for everyone reading it.
"Would you switch stores for your bot?"
Keep the weird bit
