Job breakdowns

OpenAI is pulling GPT out of Cursor on November 12 because SpaceX bought the company.

They posted a whole note about how much they care about the developers who rely on their models in Cursor. Then they used a change-of-control clause to cut the editor those people actually work in. That's not protecting developers. That's a fight with Elon, and everybody else gets to redo their setup. The post on August 28. They notified SpaceX they intend to wind the contract down, they are giving the maximum notice the contract allows, and they will not send Cursor future models, including Astra. The reason they gave is they cannot be confident SpaceX will stay inside their terms of service, based on how Elon's companies have treated contracts, including after the Twitter purchase, and Musk saying under oath that xAI had already violated those terms.

Does OpenAI truly care? Fine. Maybe every word of that is true. It still does not make the "we care about developers" line land. If you cared about the people inside Cursor, you would not write a press note that sounds like a breakup letter to Elon and then leave a few million people to find out their model picker is about to lose GPT because two labs cannot stand each other. Michael Truell Roasts OpenAI Michael Truell said OpenAI is about 5% of Cursor traffic, and they are talking. He also said Cursor was one of OpenAI's first users and they treated the platform like neutral infrastructure for the business. That is the part that should bother you if you build on this stuff. They wanted to be the default model layer. The second the wrong buyer shows up, they take the toys and go home. We still have all the AI we need. Claude, Gemini, and Grok keep working. Tom Brown at Anthropic said they will put more Claude compute into Cursor and they have been in there since Sonnet 3.5. So the editor is not dying. One vendor is walking out of it and still talking like they are the default. The thing that really irritates me! People like me and most other developers using cursor have nothing to do with this. Why punish us over your feelings being hurt. It's just not right to kick us to the curb over Sam Altman's ego. I guess I'm canceling the ChatGPT subscription. Cursor Ultra and Claude Max is enough. If your editor dies because one lab got mad, you didn't have a toolchain, you had a vendor. They had years to be the thing everybody else built on. Instead they spent Friday reminding the whole industry that GPT in your editor is a privilege they can revoke when the cap table changes. Are you switching models, switching editors, or just waiting to see if they walk it back? Personally I think its time to cut out OpenAI and stick with the other models. I have a Chat GPT pro membership and as of today it was canceled. Looks like I'll be sticking with claude and grok. Especially with the innovation of grok bot being able to help save me the time and money.
